Started in her father's shipping business at sixteen, in a clerical role. Now runs it.
Bhabita Albert was born and raised in Meten-Meer-Zorg on the West Coast of Demerara. The eldest child in her family, she joined her father's business at sixteen in a clerical role and worked her way up to lead it. Her father, Hemraj Albert, founded the company with capital from the family's other ventures; the family remain its shareholders and directors.
As Managing Director she runs a team of around 25 contract workers in an industry that is still overwhelmingly male. She holds certification as a Designated Person Ashore and as a Company Security Officer, alongside training in maritime operations and business administration.
Beyond GCITI
Albert is Managing Director of West Central Mall, Region Three's first commercial and entertainment complex, which she spearheaded, together with West Central Movies and the restaurant Atlantis Cuisine. In May 2025 she was elected President of the Essequibo Islands-West Demerara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the first woman to lead the chamber since it was founded in 2000, having previously served as its Vice President. As president she has grown membership, deepened government and diplomatic engagement, and launched a Junior Chamber to mentor young entrepreneurs.
